Some FAQ's about Scandia Down

What is down?
Simply put, it's nature's finest insulator. Down keeps you cozy in winter and also provides a light breathable layer in warmer weather. Unlike feathers, which are flat and 2-dimensional, down clusters are structured somewhat like snowflakes with dozens of soft, fine filaments. Scandia Down® only uses premium down from mature birds that have superior down clusters. As the filaments "loft" (expand and fluff), they create thousands of tiny warmth pockets, trapping air and body heat, keeping you comfortable and making our down so luxuriously lightweight.

What does "fill power" mean?
Fill Power is a guide used to measure the size of the down clusters. The size of the clusters determines the down's ability to "loft" (expand and fluff). It's the air between the clusters that keeps you warm. The larger the clusters of down, the higher the fill power. High fill power down gives you more warmth with much less weight.

Is it possible to be allergic to down?
Most "down allergies" are actually caused by dust and impurities present in down and not the down itself. All down used by Scandia Down® is purified in purified state-of-the-art equipment constructed especially to remove these allergens.

Are there any alternatives to down that are as luxurious as the real thing?
At Scandia Down® we think our hypoallergenic items are as plush and exceptional as our down filled products. Our down free hypoallergenic comforters and pillows are filled with patented microfibers that mimic the comfort, feel and warmth of natural goose down.

What distinguishes some qualities of down from others?
All down is not the same. Down from larger, more mature birds offers a higher "fill power" which simply means more insulation and more warmth with much less weight. So, when comparing down comforters, fill power is a good measure of quality.

What does baffle box construction mean, and why does it matter?
Most of our down comforter styles feature baffle box construction on the inside. This special technique involves inserting fabric "walls" between the top and bottom layers of the comforter fabric. The wall creates a deeper interior for the down to loft (expand and puff) to maximum fullness. The result keeps the down from shifting and creates an even warmth with no cold spots.

How do I go about choosing a comforter?
A good rule of thumb in choosing a comforter is its warmth level:

  • Our light weight comforters - ideal for warm climates, warmer bedrooms, or cool summer nights.
  • Our medium weight comforters - ideal for most climates, cool nights or temperature controlled bedrooms.
  • Our ultra weight comforters - thick and fluffy, designed for cold climates or for those who prefer little to no heat in their bedrooms.

How do I go about choosing a pillow?
Since everyone has a preferred way of sleeping, Scandia Down® has designed each of our pillows with unique benefits depending on your sleeping style. We recommend a soft pillow for stomach sleepers, a medium density pillow for back sleepers and a firm density pillow for side sleepers.

What does "thread count" mean and why is it important?
Thread count is the number of threads in one square inch of fabric and helps determine the quality of the sheet. Quality sheeting begins at 180 threads per square inch. The higher the thread count, the softer the "hand" or feel of the sheet and the more pill-resistant it will be. Scandia Down® sheets range from 300 to 500 thread count, giving our sheets a silky, soft and luxurious feeling.

Can I request a monogram on a Scandia Down® product?
Yes. We can monogram your new comforters, linens and towels.

Can Scandia Down® custom adjust the weight and firmness of my comforter or pillow?
Yes. At your request, we can add down to our comforters and add down to or remove down from our pillows.

How long does it take for my custom adjusted product to arrive?
Custom adjusted product is hand sewn and made to fit your tailored needs. It usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks to complete an order. Our Custom Shop representative will provide you with a projected time when you place your order.

Are Scandia Down® products covered by a warranty?
Yes. All of our down and hypoallergenic filled products such as comforters, pillows and featherbeds are covered by our Limited Warranty.

How can I protect my comforter and pillow?
With proper care and cleaning, your comforter or pillow will give you years of comfort. We strongly recommend a duvet cover or pillow protector to extend the life of our products even more.

How should I clean my down or hypoallergenic comforter or pillow?
We strongly recommend that any of our down or hypoallergenic material filled products be professionally cleaned.

What is the benefit of a mattress pad and how should I choose one?
Mattress pads are designed to protect the mattress and add an additional layer of comfort. When choosing a mattress pad, it is important to decide on how much additional comfort you require. We offer three choices, all of which provide different levels of comfort:

  • Our all cotton quilted pad- a good level of support.
  • Our wool pad- better level of support combined with additional warmth.
  • Our down and cotton pad - the best level of support.
